Baccarat was founded in the eastern French village of the same name in 1764 as a glassworks. Its owner was Prince Bishop Cardinal Louis-Joseph de Laval-Montmorency; its business — the production of windows, mirrors and stemware. In 1816, a crystal oven was acquired and, in 1823, a complete crystal dinner service was created for Louis XVIII. Eighteen years later, the first Harcourt piece was designed after a request for a ceremonial chalice from Louis Philippe I. This was then developed into an entire suite of glasses, vases and carafes, which haven’t been out of production since.
